BRIEF HISTORY
The Mount Pleasant Baptist Church was first organized under a Brush Arbor Church in 1869, on what is now known as the corner of Hawthorne Avenue and Old West Broad Street. The land, which was owned by Mr. Alvin Dearing, was purchased by Bro. Pleasant Jones, one of the original founders, and donated to the church. In appreciation of Bro. Jones’ generosity, the church was named Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in his honor. The first pastor of Mt. Pleasant was the Reverend Morrison.
In 1958 the new church was completed and dedicated in August 1964. While the old structure was being demolished and the new structure was in construction, worship service continued in a tent on the church grounds. During the years 1977-78, there were several other additions to the church, under the leadership of our present pastor, the Reverend Abraham Mosley, who has served Mount Pleasant since 1974. Specific additions included construction to enlarge the church by building the area which contains the fellowship hall and kitchen. Also added were the usher and choir rooms and the front porch.
With its softball team and basketball team, Mount Pleasant became the first Black church to join the city of Athens recreation league in 1978.
In 1983, the church bought the land which now contains the back parking lot. In January 1984, history was made, as the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church began full-time church services. Prior to that, church services were held on the second and fourth Sundays. The educational building was added in 1986 which included more office space and classrooms. As the congregation continued to grow, a balcony was added to the sanctuary in 1994 to provide more seating space for worshippers.
